I heard it had something to do with a film in which a gentleman named Richter has his head cut off and placed in a box. I'm just repeating rumors here, because that's the only way to really spread them.

Ah, what fetid florescence; it is such a querulous query that reminds me that which is likened to stiffs...
A Richter's (Anchor) box, is a set of stones thrown towards , lest at, the masses towards furnishing small-scale architectural works. Merrick hobbled through such a hobby, though without the box, or set, itself. The modernists amidst us may find it easier to think of the Richter's set as some previous, and heavier, form of Legos.
However, I have always used the term to represent any small chest of goodies kept beneath my bed.

Weird......I've heard about four or five versions of the "explanation" to this over the years. Got a chance to ask Whitey once when we bumped into each other in the East Village, but he was less than willing to part with his secrets. There was the conjecture that it related to a movie of some sort, the explanation that it was a modified Skinner Box, and a few others which I quickly forced myself to forget upon learning the true details of their gristly derivation.
Oddly enough (and a true story which still makes me chuckle).......the person who is almost as much a fan of theirs as I in this ghastly state (and who bears a strong resemblance to Whitey), once found at a tag sale a box of dubious electrical use labeled "Richters." For want of a few dollars in filthy lucre, he would have purchased it and perhaps solved a mystery...

I enjoy that we're no closer to the "truth." I much prefer whispers of rumors. I wish this person (how strong a resemblance?) you know had bought said box. The only boxes I've ever seen marked "richers" held apples. There's an orchard near my house, you see.

I know the real answer. Look to the Carpathian mountains for a clue. Only one I can give.

Very strong. Same height and basic facial features, slightlly broader shoulders.

There's a character called "Richter" in the Castlevania videogame series - that's all I could ever associate it with (gaming geek alert) ;D
